Setting Up A WordPress Site
We all know and love WordPress as the premiere blogging platform on the web today. But not everyone sees what WordPress can really do when it’s unleashed on it’s own server.
Build A Better Site
When you install WordPress on a server, the platform becomes much more than just a blogging tool. Now you have the ability to install plugins (not to mention a much wider selection of themes), and this can make almost any type of website a lot easier to build and maintain. In fact there are quite a few website design firms nowadays that use WordPress on almost every job, whether it’s a blog, an e-commerce store, or a corporate information site. Even the professionals love building in WordPress!
If you’re using WordPress.com for your website, you’re already familiar with the Dashboard and how easy it makes building your site. You can add articles, pages, and images quickly and it’s even easier than ever with the new WordPress 3.3 and it’s fly-out menus.
The limitations of WordPress.com become apparent when you want to add extra functionality to your site. Nothing against the people at WordPress, they have to limit users to some extent to prevent the whole system from being hijacked by blackhat hackers. It’s a fantastic service to the web community just to provide what they do. But if you’ve ever wanted to improve your SEO, easily add a contact form, or make your site more secure, you need to have your own WordPress installation. This isn’t as simple as creating a WordPress.com account, but it’s not exactly rocket science either.
What You’ll Need
- You’ll need a server. Depending on what kind of traffic you’re expecting to get on your site, you may need a dedicated server or you may just want a shared hosting account to save some cash.
- You’ll need a domain. This is the name users will type into their browser to find your site. Our domain is apexcomplete.com for instance.
- You need to grab a copy of the WordPress software. Thanks to the kind folks at WordPress, this is free.
- Your WordPress software must be installed and configured. This is the only potentially tricky part. The creators of WordPress try to make this as painless as possible but it’s not exactly easy. You need to create a MySQL database and configure it for use with WordPress, make sure you have PHP on your server, and install the WordPress package.
